“Enter the fragrant world of Kerala’s spice country and discover the plantations that have made the Western Ghats famous for centuries. Walk through lush gardens of pepper, cardamom, cinnamon and other tropical spices while learning about their cultivation, traditional uses and importance to Kerala’s culture and history.”

The hills around Thekkady are among India’s most important spice-growing regions, and this experience offers an intimate introduction to the plants, people and traditions behind Kerala’s famous flavours.

Accompanied by a local plantation guide, walk through a lush spice garden where cardamom, black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and other tropical plants grow among dense greenery. Discover how different spices are cultivated, harvested and prepared, and learn how farmers have adapted traditional knowledge to the challenging terrain of the Western Ghats.

Along the way, encounter the aromas and textures of the plantation first-hand. Your guide explains how some of these spices are used in Kerala’s cuisine, traditional remedies and everyday life, while also sharing stories of the region’s long connection with the international spice trade.

The experience offers a refreshing change of pace from conventional sightseeing. Instead of simply tasting Kerala’s famous cuisine, guests gain an understanding of where its distinctive flavours originate and how generations of farmers have worked with the land.

Please note: Plantation trails can become slippery during or immediately after heavy rain. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
